Le Chariot

Most bars on Esplanade at least pretend to have a kitchen angle — a few small plates, a charcuterie board, something to justify the markup. Le Chariot doesn't bother. Its concrete differentiator is the bring-your-own-food policy, which sounds minor until you're standing outside a kebab shop at 7pm trying to figure out where to actually sit down and eat it. Here, you can. Grab whatever you want from the neighborhood, walk in, and pair it with a decent draft or one of the better virgin mojitos you'll find this side of the Ill.

The terrace on Rue de l'Abreuvoir is the main event when the weather cooperates — it catches the late afternoon sun and pulls in the campus crowd doing that particular post-exam exhale. Inside, when it rains (and it rains), there's room to spread out without feeling like you need to keep ordering to justify your seat. The reggae soundtrack is low-key and appropriate.

A few honest notes: there's no elaborate drinks menu and the vibe is firmly casual-weeknight rather than special-occasion. Hours aren't reliably posted online, so treat it as a spot you drop by rather than one you schedule. But for a solo beer with a book, an impromptu group apéro, or a dog-friendly terrace hang, Le Chariot delivers exactly what it promises — which is more than you can say for places that promise too much.
