While Grande Île's dining scene leans heavily on flammekueche and choucroute, Il Girasole offers a clear alternative without any of the self-consciousness that can come with being an Italian spot in Alsace. The antipasti are well-executed, the pasta is the real draw, and the room — contemporary, not rustic-kitsch — fills up fast enough that you should book ahead or show up right at 7pm if you want a seat.

What sets this apart from the neighborhood's other casual dinner options is range without sprawl: the menu does enough to satisfy a group with different appetites, but it doesn't try to be everything. The penne al salmone and truffle ravioli are the dishes that come up again and again — substantial, well-seasoned, not overthought. The arancini hold up as a starter. Order the large pizza rather than the small one — regulars are consistent on this point. And the steak, which you might not expect to be the standout at an Italian restaurant, apparently earns its place: one reviewer called it the best they'd ever had, and the sauce does real work.

The terrace facing the quai is genuinely worth asking for, especially on a warm evening when the bustle around les ruelles has settled down. Cocktails are serviceable but unremarkable — the wine list is the smarter call. Service gets consistent praise for being warm and efficient even when the room is at capacity, which around place Gutenberg on a Friday night, it usually is.
