Most restaurants on Rue des Moulins are banking on the view of les Ponts Couverts to carry the meal. L'Oignon is different in one specific, measurable way: the French onion soup is the real thing. Long-cooked, properly gratinéed, portioned like it means something — not the watery afterthought you'll find at spots nearby that are more focused on turning tables than on the dish itself. It's the anchor of the menu and the reason regulars from deeper in Petite France make the walk.

But the menu doesn't stop there. The beef carpaccio comes out fresh and properly dressed. The escargot are the big, juicy kind worth ordering twice. The pork hock and lamb shank hold up on the main course side — these are dishes that take time, and you can tell. The tiger steak has picked up a following among those who skip the classics. Desserts are fine, not the high point.

Pricing is at the upper end, and honestly that's appropriate for what's on the plate — just go in knowing it. The stone walls and exposed beams inside are the real thing, not a reconstruction, which matters when you're this close to the barrage Vauban and every other spot is trying to look the part.

The terrace on Rue des Moulins is worth it on a weekday or shoulder season, when the tourist flow along les canaux slows enough to actually enjoy it. On a summer Saturday evening, you'll feel the crowds. Either way, book ahead — this place fills up, and the service is attentive enough that a reservation is worth protecting. Staff take the time to talk through the menu, which is rarer on this stretch than it should be.
