“Place d'Austerlitz has a gin bar that actually means it — dozens of options, not a token shelf.”
What sets Supertonic apart from the other spots dotting Krutenau is specificity. This isn't a bar that happens to stock a few gins alongside everything else — the gin list is the point. We're talking serious range: juniper-forward, anise-led, botanicals you won't find on a standard back bar. If you know what you're after, the staff can usually get you there. The Irish Coffee deserves a detour too — it's been thought through in a way that the standard version hasn't.
Brunch runs until 3 p.m., which on a Sunday in this corner of Strasbourg is genuinely useful. The menu is tight — a meat option built around eggs, a vegetarian counterpart — and at 28€ it's fair without being cheap. Grab the terrace when the weather's with you; the place d'Austerlitz view is one of the better free things Krutenau offers.
Honesty corner: service can lose the thread when the room fills up. A couple of reviews mention waiting twenty minutes without a menu in hand, then having to go looking for staff. It's not a dealbreaker, but if you're coming on a Friday night expecting precision timing, adjust accordingly.
The currywurst has a following among regulars — unexpected on a gin bar menu, but apparently it earns its place. Supertonic has the energy of a Krutenau that's grown up a little: still open late, still first-name-basis with half the room, but with something particular to offer rather than just somewhere to land.
