**What sets it apart:** While Tacos El Gordo feeds the late-night chaos and most Gaslamp joints chase the party crowd, Mike Hess offers something almost radical for downtown—a place to actually sit, nurse a beer flight, and watch sailboats drift past without anyone rushing you out. It's one of the few spots in the neighborhood designed for lingering, not pounding drinks between clubs.

The beer paddle is the play here—five samplers and you keep the glass, which beats paying full pours to figure out what you like. The Raspberry Hop Cloud shows up in reviews for good reason: fruited IPAs can go syrupy-sweet fast, but Hess keeps them drinkable. Staff knows the lineup and won't oversell you on the high-ABV stuff if you're settling in for a few rounds.

Seaport Village delivers the ocean breeze and harbor views that justify the location, but parking is genuinely terrible. The trolley from Gaslamp proper is the smarter move if you're already downtown. Indoor seating stays cooler when the afternoon sun hits, but the outdoor tables are why you're here—grab one early on weekends or accept defeat.

This works best as a midday detour or early-evening wind-down, not a destination dinner spot. Food exists but plays second fiddle to the beer. Come for the taps, stay because the harborfront beats fighting for elbow room at noisier downtown bars, and leave when parking enforcement starts circling.
