“URBN brings coal-fired, Roman-thin pizza to South Coast Highway with a build-your-own format that rewards the curious.”
Where Herb & Sea is asking you to commit to a reservation and a mood, URBN asks almost nothing of you — walk in, pick your toppings, grab a beer, and eat something genuinely excellent without making an event of it. That's not a knock. On the coast, that's a feature.
The differentiator here is the coal-fired oven and what it does to a thin-crust pie. This isn't the wood-fired, char-spotted Neapolitan you've had a hundred times in San Diego — URBN's crust is crackery, Roman-style, and it holds up to toppings in a way that floppy Neapolitan can't. The Gouda Garlic Alfredo is the one that surprises people — a white pie that regulars keep coming back to specifically because nothing else around here does it. The Italian sausage and peppers combo is the more classic play, and it earns every bite.
The build-your-own format is where the joint earns its loyal local following. You're not locked into someone else's vision of a pizza — you can go Chicken, Bacon, and Onion on a white base, or you can go full traditional. The kitchen doesn't judge. Neither should you.
The Encinitas outpost runs more counter-service than the North Park original, which means lunch is genuinely low-key — walk in off PCH, no wait, no fuss. Post-beach crowds make evenings livelier, but it never tips into chaotic. Beer and wine are on, the Caesar salad is worth ordering, and outdoor seating means you can watch the highway hum without surrendering the meal to it.
Parking along South Coast Hwy 101 is what it always is — circle the block or accept the walk. Worth it.
