“Cherrybomb on First Avenue is Bankers Hill's loudest, most unapologetic dive — pour-heavy cocktails, pool table, jukebox, zero pretense.”
Where Parc Bistro is folding cloth napkins and WetStone is decanting something Burgundian, Cherrybomb is pouring you a well drink that's 90 percent liquor and charging you ten bucks for it. That's the differentiator. Full stop. While the rest of the neighborhood dresses up for dinner, this joint dresses down — permanently — in black.
The room runs dark and loud, which is exactly the point. Pinball machines, a foosball table, a pool table, a jukebox pulling from a catalog that skews toward the kind of music that gets played at higher volumes than your neighbor appreciates — this is a place built for losing track of time, not tracking macros. The punk-bar branding gets a little tested by the Budweiser-on-tap beer program (the 2-star reviewer has notes, and they're not wrong), but the people who actually live in the neighborhood aren't coming here for craft IPAs. They're coming for Tyler behind the bar, who pours honest and talks straight, and for the kind of low-stakes Tuesday night that San Diego does better than it gets credit for.
Solo is genuinely the move — grab a bar seat, feed the jukebox, and let the regulars find you. Groups work too, especially if someone in your crew is willing to dominate at pool. This is where a Bankers Hill night *starts*, ideally before wandering south toward Downtown or east toward Hillcrest, with enough left in your pocket to afford dinner.
Practical notes: cash-friendly (there's an ATM onsite), bottles over draft if beer is your thing, and cocktails are strong enough that two rounds is probably enough runway. Don't come expecting a cocktail menu — come expecting a stiff drink and somewhere interesting to sit while you drink it.
